Great entry level telephoto lens August 6, 2010 Andrew Siew (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) The SAL75300 is a fantastically priced, light weight and easy to use telephoto zoom. The affordable telephoto zoom is compatible with both APS-C and 35mm full frame alphas. The lens is packaged with front and back caps and a hood for reducing sun flares.
However, looking at my enlargements taken with this lens, I wonder if Sony could have introduced perhaps one or two ED elements into the lens, even if it means increasing the retail price of this telephoto device.
For high contrast scenes, there is very severe purple fringing, as in you will see purple and magenta halo / lights surrounding a bright object if it is surrounded by a darker background. This phenomenon gets worse as you zoom further, and is magnified if your prints go large. In fact, the purple fringing effect is so obvious you can probably see it even on an 8R print. The purple fringing effect is very pronounced when you're shooting in daylight, which is when I imagine most photographers will be using this lens. High quality alpha bodies like the a550, a700 and a900 only makes this effect even more obvious with their added megapixels.
I gave up on this lens awhile ago since I occasionally take shots that I want to sell on a stock photo site. They have consistantly rejected my images because of the above issue, although that does not mean the SAL75300 is not a good lens for daily snapshots. Do look out for this purple fringing effect if you get to try the lens out before purchasing. Just frame a high contrast scene, or shoot a group of objects containing reflective surfaces with the test camera's flash (assuming it has one, the a850 and a900 do not have built in flash). Playback the image and zoom it as high as you can go on the test camera's LCD screen. Look at the edges of those shiny objects, and I guarantee you will see magenta and/or purple halos surrounding them.
Sony has a very high quality, but very very expensive alternative for the SAL75300. It's the SAL70300G. The SAL70300G's G optics blew the SAL75300 away, however, as I am writing this review, it costs almost 3 times more. The SAL75300 makes a great starter telephoto zoom, but it is not exactly something you can use in the long run if you are training to become a pro. Professional photographers should definitely give this a miss. And, although the lens is affordably priced, it is not exactly something you don't have to spend a good sum of money to get. Therefore, despite the many positive 5-star reviews written here, I cannot in good conscience rate this lens anything over a 2-star due to its optical flaw.
Amazing! July 13, 2010 Bobby Jones after getting a sony alpha a330 camera with the basic 18-55mm lens, i decided to upgrade and got myself this telephoto lens. i saw it on amazon and it had really good reviews and was pretty cheap so i got it. after taking it out and using out doors i can say this is one really good lens. it has auto focus built into it and it reaches out really far. its built very solid and looks really nice. but like all sony lens when you focus it, the lens is kinda loud but that's no biggy.
Sony Lens June 17, 2010 Mark Frankenhoff (Cincinnati, OH USA) The lens makes a great addition to my camera set up. The auto-focus feature is rather impressive for the zoom it really helps this amateur take great pictures.
Awesome Lens! May 10, 2010 Recreational Photog (Upstate, NY) It's a nice compliment to the 18mm-70mm lens that came with the camera. I really enjoy being able to get close ups on the action shots in the sporting events that I attend.
This lens opens a whole new dimension. March 4, 2010 Georg von Tiesenhausen (HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, US) What a fun lens this is, and what wonderful new photos I can now take with my Sony A700! I have enjoyed my photography hobby since 1950 and have used all sorts of different camera formats and brands as well as dozens of lenses of all kinds. I have entered and won contests, and I have done exhibitions, so I am not completely an amateur in photography. I can say that this lens lives up to everything it claims it can do. The images are clear and in focus, even in the corners at full zoom. It works well in low light, and it is fast enough that I rarely need to use a tripod. It is just as easy to operate as any of the zoom lenses of my 35 mm film cameras. Great product. I'm going to have quite a bit of fun with this.
