I don't know what I could do to kill this camera! February 2, 2010 M. Leon (Orlando, FL) I love this camera, it is easily the best electronics purchase I have made in the last two years. I have dropped it off a moving bicycle onto asphalt, where it got run over by another bike, and only had a few scratches on the case for the experience. The waterproofing is great, it uses real rubber seals, unlike the junk Pentax I had before. I love this camera, and can't recommend it enough... One of my friends bought one on my revommendation, and she feels the same about hers. This is about as bullet-proof as a camera gets, and its a great value, too!
Do NOT take this "Waterproof" camera underwater. January 18, 2010 C. Healy Okay, I've been burned. Bought this camera in Nov 2008 and took it snorkeling in early January 2010. Never went more than 4 feet underwater, and now the camera is hosed. OF course, it's out of warranty by one month. It's like they time these things. I'm going to try sending it in for repair, but I will NOT be taking it in the water again. What a joke of a camera.
Olympus of course turned the issue on me, asking if I had done the required yearly maintenance of replacing all of the seals/gaskets on the camera? wtf?! Who does that??? Who even knows you are supposed to do that?
As with an earlier reviewer, the paint has peeled off the front (despite always being kept in a soft case when not in use and never being dropped, etc).
I was always pretty happy with this camera -- picture quality was always good, and it was easy to use.
I'm going to get this replaced and let it live out its life on dry land, but Olympus just lost a customer.
Great Underwater Camera!! Ok for everyday use. January 5, 2010 David Manning (Rochester, NY USA) We bought our Olympus 1030SW before a 3 week Sailing/Snorkeling/Hiking trip in Greneda and the Grenadines. Was a little concerned because of some of the bad reviews but we have had ours not for 8 months and love it.
Very straighforward operation and interface. i have been a die hard Canon user for years and did not look forward to learning to use the Olympus after reading some of the reviews. I found it to be very simple and the large screen allowed me to make changes underwater with ease.
I have taken over 2 thousand photo's with it (over 800 underwater) and have had no complaints. The underwater image quality is astonishing. I found using editing software to touch it up helps(for wase of use Picasa did a great job bringing out the color and depth of the underwater photo's). Even underwater video was of good quality and the sound recording was suprisingly good. I recommend getting the 2MB or larger xD Picture Card for unlimited recording option.
On the ground the rugged durability is a plus. Hiking though rain forests, through torential rains, flooding and mud I didn't have to worry about the camera (though it was a miracle we made it out!) I would recommend this camera to anyone that is active and wants to have a camera that can keep up with them without the worry of damaging it.
The limited zoom range and optics has it draw backs for the "great outdoor" shots but you can't have it all. I would recommend this camera to anyone that it looking for a rugged/waterproof point and shoot with options for refined photo's if time permits.
Good for a couple years of abuse December 15, 2009 Matthew Fledderjohn (Ann Arbor, MI) i bought this camera (june 2008) because it was waterproof and it had lots of megapixels. I like to do winter/water sports, although, ever since i moved in with my girlfriend, i don't do much of that anymore. It takes photos and videos underwater. But i think i messed up my microphone because there is a setting for underwater video, and i had it on regular video and was recording some underwater excitement, and now the audio is terrible. I don't know if it was the many times i took it underwater on 'surface mode' or if the audio is just bad anyway. Every single video i take now has a thumping in it, it sounds like someone is wacking the microphone every couple of seconds.
'shutter' button sticks. i sometimes need to take a picture of my dog cuz he's so cute, but the picture doesn't take when i push the button. I have to roll my finger on the button or just wait until it takes. This doesn't happen all the time, just when i need it to be quick
i brought the camera to the beach in my bathing suit pocket and i played a game of 500 with a frisbee and the labels on the mode wheel started coming off. they are partially there now and i can barely see what setting i'm in
There is a metal frame part around the lens which has recently become loose. I dont' think its waterproof anymore. I've only had the camera for 1.5 years. i was rough with it, but i was expecting more durability.
i think this camera is perfect if you use for gently water sports, don't use it for extreme water sports. It's shock resistance is questionable, i never really banged it, it just started falling apart and having bad audio.
it takes high pixelated photos, so make sure its in focus or else you'll have a bad picture that takes up a lot of space on your hard drive.
ive abused it, no worries November 24, 2009 J. Martin (Lafayette, LA) seriously, ive abused this camera and it works great! Ive brought it snorkeling, sandy beaches, snow skiing(not very good fell many times on it)ive dropped it in alcohol drinks as pranks, thrown it in pools and dropped it a bunch of times..this thing works great,
took some funny pictures and videos, with no worries..i love that i dont worry about it at all..there have a BUNCH of instances where if it would have been a regular camera it would have been ruined from people just spilling things on tables or dropping it. it's hilarious to mess with people that dont know its waterproof..although it's pretty well known now
the only thing i can say i dont like about it is for when you take off the flash, if you are not perfectly still the picture will be fuzzy..
the only issue ive had with the camera is a sticking lens cover sometimes and that is because i didnt rinse the camera well after whatever mess it was in..but i would soak it or run some water and poof working again..
honestly a great camera, and it is the only one i buy..i bought the first one when it came out...and just never bought anything else..so im currently on this one and was going to see about upgrading to the next level one the tough 8000..but there is not much of a difference, so i will stick with this one a little longer till they raise the depth and drop height.
