poor video compression - lots of artifacts June 30, 2009 I purchased this yesterday, and am returning it today. I needed a camcorder to record billiard and pool matches for practice and archiving. Now I wasn't looking for HD for broadcast, but it would have been nice to actually have some decent picture.
On the viewscreen, the picture was fine, but I was dismayed when I got it home with 4 hours of footage on Ultra Fine. It uses MPEG2 in a .MOD format. Not very friendly to work with. I didn't even try the lower resolutions.
The scene was a very well lit 10'x5' billiard table, with a dark background. The three balls had lots of artifacts as they moved around the table. This was not going to be acceptable at all. This may work well for other uses, as having a backup camera for random things you may find, but be aware, the picture quality is HORRIBLE. I have no idea how someone on these reviews actually said they couldn't tell the difference between this and HD!
The features of the camera were very nice, including really cool touch "laser" navigation, and remote control, but the video quality was unacceptable. Worse than even the old VHS camcorders of the 80's/90's.
Very good for the price June 21, 2009 Pros: 1. Very excellent recorded files 2. Compact good design. 3. 30 GB is enough for more than 7 hours of ultra high quality recorded files.
Cons: 1. Doesn't have night recording 2. You can't capture good still images at all because it is VERY sensitive to hands vibrations. 3. You may need to purchase an additional battery with extended power because it runs out of juice in no time (<1 hour).
This is what i have so far, if i noticed something later i will update this review.
Easy to use professional Quality Camcorder June 15, 2009 Easy to use with good professional quality videos. The still shots are not as good as a digital camera designed solely for that use. It really is a video camera. Hard to keep stills in focus when lighting is not the greatest. Comes with a software program easy to use and well designed for handling creating with your videos and still shots. Liked it so much...I bought this one for my son-in law who loved using mine for videos.
Great unless you want to make movies! June 14, 2009 Love the hard drive camera. Has a lot of good features. Quality is generally OK, the zoom is nice.
However, it's all ruined by the fact that the camera saves the files in .MOD/.MOI format. This makes it a huge pain to try and put together a movie from all the clips using either Windows Movie Maker or, for example, Adobe Premiere Elements. Both of them crash when trying to deal with these files, when clearly they shouldn't.
JVC really bombed by using this format. If not for that this camera would be great and I'd give it 4-5 stars. But this has been a HUGE headache for me. I know there are "Workarounds" but I've tried a couple and they are either still a huge pain or they don't work at all.
Nice looking device but image quality unacceptable June 14, 2009 I bought this camera to make home videos of my kids. I am not at all a professional videographer but the image quality of this camera leaves a lot to be desired, very grainy even in adequate lighting. The camera is very small and sleek, LCD screen very clear but the images on my computer were not, which is way more important. You get what you pay for with this camera. I returned it and bought a mini dv camcorder, much better quality. I think you would have to pay a lot more money for a hard drive camera that has good quality video.
