the good and the bad June 24, 2009 I went from a Cannon SI to this.... hummmmm When this camera functions best, you can not beat the photos you get, they are the BEST!! However, the camera is very inconsistant. The good.... use the view finder instead of the LCD and your battery lasts FOREVER.... recharging takes awhile so get an extra. Mine came with the battery and charger in the box. The zoom is incrediable and poweful. The camera is lightweight and very easy to carry around. The not so good. The settings, including manual can be unresponsive and agravating. The camera likes to focus on other things, so pictures can be blury. It always wants to flash, even in off mode. It has a delay which can't seem to be changed so expect pictures that are blury and slightly off. The on/off toggle is exactly the same so the camera does not always respond to you wanting it off when on or vise versa. It also seems to get stuck processing and you must pull the battery to stop it. Kodak would be wise to have the instruction manual more easily avaiable on line as you will need it.
After 1 month, can't transfer pictures anymore. 1 month + 1 week: Works again, 3 Stars, not 1 Star June 6, 2009 I just had this camera for 1 month, when I suddenly could no longer transfer pictures from the camera to the computer. I consulted the manual, followed self-help instructions on Kodak's web site, and did an on-line chat. The information I got contradicts each other, and nothing solved the problem, at least so far.
You're supposed to connect the USB cable, turn on the camera, and then the software comes up automatically. Well, suddenly nothing happened anymore. I consulted the "extended manual" for trouble shooting tips, to no avail. Then I went through the step-by-step self help instructions on the Kodak support site. Well, I did it twice, but each time at the end it asked me to check for a green blinking light, and because there wasn't one, supposedly the camera was broken and I should send it in for repair. Except: There never was such a green blinking light. OK, so that didn't make sense. Then I used the online chat. The technician finally instructed me to buy a "U-8 USB cable", which I did. He really didn't make much sense to me (first he told me that my USB port on my computer was broken. when I objected that other devices work just fine, and that I tried all three ports, then he said "you need a U-8 cable". well, what do you mean? that I don't have one, or that the one I have is broken. "you need a U-8 USB cable). Sceptically, I bought one. Well, it just arrived - and it still doesn't work.
So after 1 month, I now have a useless camera. I'll have to contact support again, and probably send it in for repair. Not great at all, but the worthless support is just not acceptable. I don't expect that self-help steps or FAQs be able to solve every problem, but they mustn't give *incorrect* information. And an online "technician" should not what he / she is talking about.
Update: Used online chat again. This time, I got someone who actually knew what he was talking about. Fixing the problem involved a lot of wizardry on my computer (removing and reactivating certain devices and stuff). And it works again!
By the way, I do love the camera otherwise. Just keeping my finger crossed that I either don't run into problems again, or if I do, that I luck out and get someone who knows their stuff.
I apparently cannot change / update my rating, so it'll stay at one star.
KODAD EASTSHARE CAMERA REVIEW May 18, 2009 We are quite happy with the performance and ease of use of this camera. The pictures are sharp and the colors are accurate.
great camera, very satisfied May 18, 2009 I bought a Kodak Z740 three years ago, and took almost 13000 pictures without any problem. I upgraded it to Z1012 two weeks ago, and very surprised to find the HD video of Z1012 even better than my JVC330. The picture quality of this camera is really good, clear, sharp, and the great color of Kodak camera. But don't forget buy a rechargeable Li battery for it.
Automatic setting useless, Kodak won't upgrade firmware May 17, 2009 Do not expect to be able to use this camera in automatic setting. After taking only three pictures, the camera freezes up for processing. I contacted Kodak, and they told me to stop using the automatic setting. I own a Kodak C875 which does not suffer from this defect. The Kodak Z1015IS had the same problem which Kodak provided a firmware upgrade to fix. They will not offer an upgrade for the Z1012IS. Avoid if you do not constantly want to reset the camera for proper lighting conditions by hand.
