Product Description The sleek design of the PowerShot A1000 IS is as refreshing as a breath of fresh air. Better still, its highend
features make everything simple: theres the 10.0-megapixel resolution and powerful 4x optical zoom
lens with Optical Image Stabilizer for sharpness along the full zoom range. A DIGIC III Image Processor
with Canon Face Detection automatically lets every face stand out. Easy Mode and Easy Playback make
this camera a marvel of simplicity. With a bright 2.5-inch LCD, its available in four two-toned colors.

Very good compromise camera January 27, 2010 Robert D. Beving (Los Angeles) Our old 5mp Kodak died and we needed a replacement. Since I do a lot of hiking I needed a camera with a viewfinder (for shots in bright sunlight) while my wife just wanted something small and easy to use. The 2.5" screen is just large enough to satisfy her needs while the viewfinder (although it only renders 78% of the picture) allows me to frame shots in the bright outdoors. Its versatile with a program mode that gives you some measure of control (not bad for a camera at this level) but has an adaquate auto mode. Picture quality is not outstanding but more than adequate. Indoor pictures can be tricky on automatic mode where it has a tendency to want to use a higher ISO than it should. Forcing an ISO of 200 or less on the Program mode helps a lot. Buttons and menu are fairly easy to get used to. At 4x it has a slightly longer zoom than many others in its class. It feels good in the hand. Consumer Reports liked it better than the 12 MP successor, the A1100. All in all its a very nice under $200 camera.
GREAT Camera But S.L.O.W. January 20, 2010 Brett (Barbados) Just a Quick point to make -I have 3 cameras for different uses, this is my party camera, but unfortunatley it takes too long to recover after it takes a picture using the flash REGARDLESS of the type/brand AA batteries I use.
So will have to hunt for a quicker recovering camera.
This camera ROCKS January 19, 2010 Ivan A. Castro This is an awesome camera. I used it in my New York trip last year and again in my Arizona trip this month. It took amazing pictures 95% of the time. The other 5% is mostly due to operator error. You could just put it in "Auto" but it is better to take time to know the different scenes and features of the camera. Yes it is a tad bigger than other newer models. But this camera is worth every penny. You will never regret buying this..
Camerwindow: Which Applies To This Model? January 2, 2010 ctateswphilly (Phila., PA) Purchased in Aug. 2009, and as my 1st digital camera, I'm still learning its features, and take captions a couple of times monthly. One thing for certain, even with the use of Duracell rechargeable batteries, I get the "change batteries" prompt a bit too often to my liking.
Additionally, I have yet to find any support for my inquiry of Camerawindow. Namely, of these:
Canon Utilities CameraWindow
Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC
Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC_DV 5 for ZoomBrowser EX
Canon Utilities CameraWindow DC_DV 6 for ZoomBrowser EX
Which of the above is/are specifically for the Canon A1000IS?
ANY response, from those familiar with the above, would certainly be appreciated.
Works good with easy features December 30, 2009 G. Alexander (Connecticut, USA) This item was purchased as a gift, but even so, I've had the opportunity to use it here and there, and it has worked well. One of the main reasons I bought it was the viewfinder that lets you take a picture without using the screen on the back. I have another camera that has the same feature, and it has come in so handy that I did not want to give a gift without this view finder option. The reason I went with this camera is the Canon name and favorable reviews and lower cost through an Amazon partner, where-as the camera I have (Ni-kon) would have cost considerably more. The picture quality is good, the flash works well, and the camera is using a 4 GB SDHC class 6 memory card beautifully. For batteries, we gave Energ. ultimate lithium, which lets the user avoid having to use & manage rechargeable batteries, since new ones are easy to replace and recycle. The use of the camera is limited, so the batteries last and do not loose charge while in storage, and the flash charges quickly still. I have not seen the pictures on a computer screen yet, but on the preview back screen, the pictures look good, and video also looks good. The buttons on the back could have better labels, but the selection wheel on the top works excellent, with nice clicks between the different camera options. Overall, I'm please with the camera and its function.
