Love it, love it, love it! August 25, 2010 Ms. C. J. Ellis (London) This product has really transformed the way I run and helped immeasureably with my training for The Great North Run. I like the simplicity of the displays on the watch itself, combined with the detailed and fairly complex analysis options when you link it to Garmin Connect - the maps are great and I love seeing exactly where my run has taken me that day. It basically does everything I want it to do - admittedly my requirements are pretty straightforward, but in my view it does everything that most runners will need / want it to. My only slight gripe is that the bezel control can on occasion be too sensitive, so that it changes display when you don't want it to (but the lock bezel function resolves this) and on other occasions (perhaps when a bit wet or sweaty!) it doesn't respond as quickly as it should - but that isa very minor issue as far as I'm concerned. So all in all it's great and if you're a fairly committed runner and want to monitor your performance really effectively or you're training for an event I would definitely recommend it.
Garmin Forerunner 405 June 28, 2010 Vernon I read quite a few reviews of this product both on Amazon and various other sites and ended up more than a little confused. I finally decided to buy the product as on balance the reviews seemed to be positive. The setup was reasonably straight forward even for someone who tends to read the manual after it has all gone wrong and I soon had the 405 connected up to my laptop ready to download my first run. Configuring the watch wasn't particularly intuitive but with some perseverance and the odd look at the manual I was ready to go. Much seems to have been made of the bezel and how it is difficult to use particularly in wet weather. It does take a bit of getting used to but once mastered it is fairly straight forward. Buttons would be easier but the trade-off would be having the equivalent of a large brick strapped to your wrist. I am sure using the bezel on the run is tricky but I am far more focussed on keeping going than finding out minute details of how I am doing which is available with a little patience as it toggles through the displays. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Garmin Forerunner 405 as it does nearly everything the advertising says it will do which is rare. I am not sure it has improved my running performance yet but has introduced a bit more fun !
don't believe the bad reviews! It's fine! April 18, 2010 Grey Fox (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Read the reviews and couldn't decide between this and the 310xt, as some complained about the 405s ease of use.The 405 looks and wears better so went for it and does the job just fine.yes the bezel can be fiddly (a wee bit!) but it can easily be turned off during runs and is okay to use even with sweaty hands!Settings are varied enough to have a lot of info during your run if you want and you can set it to scroll between the screens if worried by "sensitive" bezel.Shows speed,pace,distance,HRM,calories,elevation,direction....more than enough info for the average runner.Easy to download runs to pc using the stick and you can quickly see your runs on google earth or in graph form.Would recommend as to buy a similar product from another company you wont get all this for this price.Only downside may be the battery life but if you are planning to run for less than 8 to 9 hours at a time then that should be no problems either...which is most of us!
If you want a HRM and GPS watch that isn't the size of a brick and aren't planning to use it to compete in 24 hour marathons then give this a try!
Really, really like it September 24, 2009 Jane-O 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After trying a couple of non-GPS devices, I decided to get one of these as a birthday present - and Amazon beat everyone else on price. Having used it for a few weeks now, I can say that this watch has really transformed the way I train. Being aware of mile pace means I can do a proper warm up (rather than starting off too fast, which I always used to do) and ensure that I maintain target pace in training. The accurate distance measurer has also been invaluable - I really like to keep track of my mileage and quickly realised that some of my long runs were not quite as long as I'd thought. So pace and distance are the two most important functions for me, and this watch is fantastic for both.
On the down side...it's not the most intuitive device. The printed instructions and the on-screen set-up are very basic and do not help you to understand all the watch's functions. The video tutorials on the Garmin site are very helpful but even they don't cover all the functionality. So basically I know that this watch is capable of a lot more than I use it for, and I look forward to getting my head round that one of these days.
The bezel is okay but not great, I do always lock it on a run as many others advise. And the watch itself is comfortable and unobtrusive to wear. I feel sure that the next version will be vastly improved, and that I will really want one.
only gadget but now i love it September 21, 2009 M. A. Davenport Great watch, makes those average training runs much more fun. Racing yourself in virtual partner mode, 'im up at the split!' cool. Buy one if you run or exercise regularly and occasionally get bored.
