Amazon.co.uk Review Punk had flirted with mainstream attention before--the Clash and Sex Pistols had hits--but didn't fully advance from the underground until this pure-punk 1994 album. In singing catchy, tight rock & roll tunes--including "Longview", "Welcome to Paradise" and "When I Come Around"--Green Day sneered its way into the hearts of millions. The Berkeley, California, trio also ignited a debate: Is it selling out for punks to sign with a major record label and become multi-platinum stars? Fortunately, this band didn't seem to care as much as Kurt Cobain did. --Steve Knopper

Dookie: it's good. October 22, 2008 It's the first time I've revisited this album for a while. I don't really think of myself as a Green Day fan anymore, but this was the first record of theirs that I heard. I then bought them all up to, and including Warning (which I thought was terrible). I won't be buying American Idiot.
So I just thought I'd peruse the reviews while listening to it; there's a lot of talk of punk, but I don't see anyone mentioning The Clash anywhere... or any of Green Day's predecessors. That really shows the generation that Green Day appealed to. I'm pretty sure I was 16 or 17 when this came out, and it became standard listening for myself and all my friends. I started my first band, and we would cover Basket Case and Welcome to Paradise. So it was pretty important.
Listening to Dookie now is a fairly refreshing experience. It brings those 6th form days right back to me, but it doesn't leave me feeling like I can't enjoy it anymore. It's still a breathless, relentless and pulsating album. I don't think there's a real weak track on it. Sure, it's pretty much the same idea from start to finish, but that's what punk is like, by and large. And this album has lots of endearing subtle moments. Billie Joe makes tunes by slightly slurring his words so that you often don't know what he's singing, but do know that you like the sound of it. Mike's bass jumps and bounces all over the place, giving your brain a little bit of variation to focus on, and Tre's drumming is insistent and inventive. Then you've got some well considered backing vocals at critical times - see "She" for the best example - and some amusing stories.
Essentially you've got all the elements that make up a Green Day album, but here they are more honed than on earlier records, and less tainted by commerciality than later ones.
So where does it fit? For me, the best Green Day album is Nimrod. That one has more variety, and some awesome tunes. Dookie is probably second best, Insomniac third (that one is pretty much identical to Dookie, but without the hits), after that I can't really choose between the 1039 and Kerplunk... I just know that Warning is the worst.
So, Dookie: it's good.

The best Green Day album to date October 31, 2007 This is my favourite Green Day album to date, it is very closely followed by their most recent one, American Idiot. This album is filled with extremely catchy songs and once you hear them a few times, you will feel the urge to sing along as loudly as you can.
There are so many great songs and I don't actually have a favourite, and they are all great. If you want to buy a Green Day album, this is the album to buy, I highly recommend it.
A great album October 21, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album is amazing, but not as good as Green Days latest album 'American idiot'. However, this CD still has some classic songs on it which really do have some of Green Days best. The album starts with 'Burnout'. This is a fun song with some intersting guitar work at the end. The next song 'Having a blast' is quite fast paced, and yet manages to apply the brakes for the amazing chorus.
The album has all of the singles as well, such as: 'longview', 'Basket Case' and 'When I Come Around'. They are all very catchy and among Green Days best. Longview is a very memorable song. The song 'she' starts slowly but then explodes along at a break-neck pace which makes for a good song. This album has 7 excellent tacks, and for about 6- its well wort the buy.
Oh, and by the way- buy their album 'American Idiot' because it has a more mature, darker sound to it........
Great first album July 25, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is Green Days first album and it is probably their best one. Basketcase is probably my favourite song on it but there are so many good songs its hard to choose. This and American Idiot are, in my opinion, Green Days best albums. The lyrics and tunes to all the songs are great and I genuinely don't think I have any complaints. I strongly reccomend this cd to any rock\punk music fan.
