Boult recorded the Vaughan Williams Symphonies for Decca in the 1950s with the composer present - much praised performances which have been in the catalogues pretty well ever since. His HMV/EMI recordings from the late 60s and early 70s present essentially the same approach with perhaps slightly less urgency and slightly more reflectiveness. They are beautifully recorded and very pleasing on the ear. These two Symphonies, which predominantly present the lyrical, poetic side of the composer, are wonderfully done, and it is the combination of lovely phrasing and forward movement which make them so effective - the music never wallows or becomes self-regarding, there is always a sense of structure and 'going somewhere'. At its now very modest price, this is a most desirable CD.
