3 out of 5 stars Leucocyte   September 21, 2008

I am a thoroughgoing fan of e.s.t. but for me it stopped with Tuesday Wonderland.

Whatever happened to the melody? This is a very disappointing album, weighed down with SFX, and not very inspiring. It's relatively unimportant, however, as we are left with an overall superb legacy of material. You win some, you lose some.

4 out of 5 stars A haunting epitaph to a jazz legend   September 16, 2008

Fact 1. EST were the most exciting, critically acclaimed, innovative and commercially successful jazz trio of at least the last decade.

Fact 2. Their eponymous pianist, Esbjorn Svensson, died in a diving accident in June 2008 aged just 44.

The world has lost a jazz giant, for sure. But what have EST left behind with Leucocyte, their last ever album? What Leucocyte most definitely is not is more of the same. As one other reviewer said, this is certainly not comfy background music (not that EST ever were). And yet neither would be it be fair to describe it as an awkward concept album. While much "freer" than their previous records - and indeed the whole album was based on improvisation and recorded over a mere 48 hours - how you'll enjoy it is probably closely related to how you came across EST in the first place. For those of a more jazz-orientation, well-versed in the sounds of Germany's ECM label, for example, I'm sure that Leucocyte will be well-received. It's edgy, darker, and well, just a little bit "difficult". And impressively so - after all, this was recorded in May by a band at the height of its commercial and critical success. And yet EST were still prepared to risk it all to take themselves in an entirely new direction. Hence for those who've come to enjoy EST for their melodies more than their improvisations, who would generally listen to more rock and pop than jazz, Leucocyte will probably require some work and it will most definitely not be to everyone's taste. Whereas previous EST albums appealed to the lighter side of the soul, tracks such as "Earth" and "Ab Initio" take it right to the dark side, bringing forth a haunting intensity that EST had previously only ever hinted at. Incredibly, it feels like music from the darkest, innermost reaches of EST's soul. And in the context of Esbjorn Svensson's subsequent death, it's thoroughly haunting. But as an epitaph to one of the greatest musicians of his generation, it couldn't feel more appropriate. EST will be sorely missed. And Leucocyte, like their previous albums, provides more than ample illustration why.

2 out of 5 stars is this really jazz   September 9, 2008

I have almost all the est cds and seen them live about 5 times.Got this cd last weekend and i must say im a bit dissapointed with it.tracks 1 to 4 are superb, but from then till the end a lot of electronics come into it and i found myself loosing interest in the cd.Dont get me wrong the untimely death of Esbjorn Svensson is a great loss to the jazz world.Seven Days Of Falling is in a different league to this cd.Anybody thinking of buying this should buy Marcin Wasilewski Trio January cd superb will never buy a better jazz cd this year.

3 out of 5 stars Bold, daring   September 7, 2008

This album wasn't created to be an epitaph so shouldn't be seen as such. It came out of a marathon recording session during their Australian tour and is unlike most of their music live and quite unlike anything previously on disc. It's more like the album Song X and so would be unlikely to getting such rave reviews if it wasn't for the sudden and terrible recent event. It's early days but I can't see me reaching for this CD like I have and continue to do for many of their other albums when my wife and I are sitting down after the kids have gone to bed. It's wind up music rather than wind down which doesn't make it a bad album but it's one the average listener will need to work at. Another Thursday Wonderland would have been difficult to achieve and bless them for taking the risk. I shall need to work at this one.

5 out of 5 stars Final Album Exceeds Expectations   September 4, 2008

As critics have commented, E.S.T. seemed to have reached their peak and had been coasting along for the last three albums. Then Esbjorn dies tragically and their final album comes along and smacks the critics with a barrage of frantic drumming and bass, manic, repetitive piano riffs and a wall of electronic sound. This is much more rythmic, chaotic and noisy than the previous three albums, but still retains the melodies and atmosphere that a trademark of this band. This shows E.S.T had not peaked. Anyone who things only greasy blokes with guitars can make a racket should check this out!
