The most successful Abba compilation ever August 2, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Fifteen years on from release, this album is still going strong, having recently seen of an attempt to replace it by the inferior "Number Ones".
Abba Gold was masterminded from Polydor UK in 1992 and is heavily weighted towards the UK hits. 18 of Abba's 19 Top 10 UK hits are here, the only omission being Summer Night City, left off in favour of perhaps their most well known small hit/album track, Thank You For The Music. The only other significant track missed off is UK Top 3 hit, Angeleyes, represented here by its double A-side, the international hit Voulez-Vous. That is the only concession to the non-UK market though.
Lay All Your Love On Me, not considered an "official" single and only released in a few countries, is included here on the grounds that it was a Top 10 UK hit (it also helped that Erasure had covered the track for their Abba-Esque EP earlier in 1992). In contrast, some big hits outside the UK, such as I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do (a small hit here) are thankfully left off.
If you don't already own this album (and there can't be many people left who don't) this is an essential purchase.
what can you say? February 28, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
It's all been said about Abba, but I love the band so I'm going to say it again! It's summed up by a discovery the Sex Pistols made. At a gig, they played a tape of 'Dancing Queen' ironically before they went on stage - they disapproved of Abba and wanted to ridicule them. It backfired. Their audience cheered, danced and clapped. I've been hearing the band on and off ever since 'Waterloo' and, unlike most pop music, it really doesn't seem to age or date. There's a freshness, a vitality and (sometimes) a poignancy that is really very attractive. So three cheers to Abba and to this excellent compilation.
thank you for the music - the joy its bringing... May 24, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The chorus of one of the most beautiful songs ever written, sung by one of the most beautiful singers you could hope to see or hear. The quality and originality of the 19 songs on this cd were probably not surpassed by the Beatles. In the 25 or so years since Abba split up as a group I have yet to hear the equal of Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad when they sing together.Everyone laughed at how they dressed - nobody laughed at how they sang:buy this recording, and you'll understand why.
Fun, ear-catching, some depth July 31, 2005 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
I've liked ABBA all along, but there was a period when it definitely wasn't cool to do so. I'm glad they're somewhat back in style, so I can write this review without too many laughing at me.The music of ABBA flows and thrums and surges and oozes with excitement, life, joy, and bittersweet love. The lyrics cannot be overlooked, as they address all the themes addressed by most musicians: love (unrequited, lost, newly begun, in full bloom), grief, triumph, and heartache. I'm sure everyone has a favorite, but "Fernando" was always mine. It tells the story of love amongst revolutionaries and dreams that made it, and dreams that died. To me, it's haunting.
Outstanding June 15, 2005 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
Every track a gem. Clever, clever songs where every element (vocals, lyrics, music, production) work in harmony to deliver 'the hook'. Poppy but never disposable, camp but never tacky, Abba are arguably the greatest pop band ever. Abba Gold leaves almost every other pop Greatest Hits redundant by comparison.
